Upper Eyelid Aesthetics ( Blepharoplasty )

Upper eyelid skin may sag with advancing age or sometimes due to genetic factors at an early age, or it may be the appearance described as bagging. This makes us look older and tired than we are.

You can quickly get rid of this situation with a relatively simple surgery performed with local anaesthesia for an average of one hour and usually without anaesthesia. Rapid recovery time is one of the advantages of having no severe complications.

Frequently asked questions ( FAQ)

1
Blepharoplasty - what is upper eyelid surgery?

In eyelid aesthetics, excess skin and sometimes herniated fat bags are removed. In some people, even tissues such as sagging muscles and tear bladders are tightened or hanged. The operation lasts approximately 30-40 minutes; each of the two upper eyelids is performed simultaneously; after a short observation, you can go home immediately.

2
Is there an age limit for eyelid surgery?

Contrary to what is known, eyelid surgery can be applied to many patients at a young age who are genetically complaining about this condition. However, after a certain age, sagging-deformation of the upper eyelid skin or swelling of the eyebags is common, and eyelid aesthetics is the most common aesthetic surgery globally.

3
Will there be a significant scar after the procedure?

As with every surgery, there will be scars after this surgery. Although the scarring depends entirely on the person’s genetic and external factors, the scar is hidden at the anatomical folding point (the folding area of the upper eyelid) in eyelid surgery. Simultaneously, since this area’s bleeding is good, the scar is one of the least common surgeries. During this period, the process is supported by special creams. The scar is especially evident in the first 3-6 months when the healing is active; it will decrease over time.

4
When is the right time for eyelid surgery?

There is no particular preferred time and season for eyelid surgeries. The critical thing in this surgery is that the patient’s eyes are not exposed to direct sunlight. It is always possible to perform this surgery provided that regular sunglasses are used after the surgery.

5
Can aesthetic eyelid surgery be performed simultaneously with different operations?

Eyelid aesthetics can be performed alone or applied together with other facial operations such as a facelift. Only eyelid surgery provides a certain amount of resuscitation to the face. Intervention with the sagging forehead, eyebrows, and face will provide high satisfaction results by holistically approaching the face. The eye’s skin is the thinnest in our body and is, therefore, the easiest to wrinkle. Over the years, deformation increases with the return of the mid-facial bones. This affects both the eyebrows’ location, the eyelid, the eye muscles, and the fat layer. Although some deformations around the eyes can now be corrected temporarily by botox intervention, eyelid surgeries are applied to provide a permanent solution. Eye surgery can be easily performed on any person at any age when these deformations are seen.

6
Is general anaesthesia required for eyelid surgery?

Can it be done without general anaesthesia with local anaesthesia? Eyelid surgery is usually performed without general anaesthesia, and if necessary, the patient is given a mild sedative to the surgical area with local anaesthetic material, but it is one of the rapid surgeries performed under sterile operating room conditions. If our patients prefer, it can also be performed under general anaesthesia.

7
Is it necessary to stay in the hospital after the procedure?

Do you need dressing? With local anaesthesia, you can quickly go home after a short observation after surgery. Our patients who receive general anaesthesia can go home if there is no problem after relatively long observation. There is a thin band on the upper eyelids after the surgery; contrary to what is thought, the eyes are not closed with coarse dressing; they are left open. The patients are discharged with protection against dust and wind by wearing sunglasses.

8
How is the postoperative process?

In the first 2-3 days after the procedure, oedema, swelling, and sometimes intense bruising may occur due to their genetic characteristics. There is a thin band on the incision line. No dressing is performed until the sutures are removed on the seventh day; the sutures are special aesthetic sutures, and removal is a comfortable procedure with a single move. You may need to use special cream and drops after the procedure.

9
When can you return to daily life?

After the first 1-2 days of mild oedema, patients can continue their social life at home and go out with sunglasses. Mild bruising and swelling that may occur after removing the sutures after a week can be easily stored. Furthermore, in an average of 7-10 days, you can return to daily life.

10
When will the final result be seen?

As with any surgery, although the definitive outcome in eyelid surgeries depends entirely on the person, mild oedema and redness may continue until the sixth week after the first ten days of healing. Full healing and skin adaptation is an average of 6-12 months, which is the whole physiological healing process.

LOWER EYELID ESTHETIC

In the lower eyelid, excess skin, bagging, a herniation may occur at an early age, mostly due to genetic factors and deformation compared to the upper eyelid. In particular, the best treatment for uncomfortable swelling of the lower eyelid that does not close with makeup or other non-surgical procedures is lower eyelid aesthetics. In our discipline, we perform the surgery for the lower eye bags from the inside of the eye without scars.

If there is excess skin, we immediately take excess skin to hide it under the eyelashes to the folding point and hide the scar here.

Frequently Asked Questions(FAQs)

1
What should it be considered before surgery?

As with any surgical procedure, before the precautions to be taken against conditions such as other diseases after detailed consultation with your doctor; it is recommended to stop drinking alcohol for at least three weeks to stop all blood-thinning drugs, to stop herbal tea-support products with blood-thinning effect and to stop smoking if recovery is not desired to be adversely affected. The anesthesiologist’s recommendations should be considered before the surgery, and general precautions should be taken according to the preferred anaesthesia method. Problems such as any comorbidities, allergies, frequent herpes should be reported. Please inform your doctor about the medications you regularly use.

2
Is there an age limit for lower eyelid surgery?

As well as occurring with age and deformation, lower eyelid aesthetics can be performed at an early age (over 18 years of age) due to herniation of lower eyelid bags due to genetic factors.

3
Will there be a significant scar after the surgery?

In our discipline, as long as there is no excess skin, there will be no external scars since there will be a trans-conjunctional method, a procedure performed from the inside of the eyelid. However, if excess skin is required to be removed, there will be a thin scar extending from the bottom of the eyelashes to the eye edge. Although this scar is slightly evident at first, it will decrease over time as the blood supply is adequate and will reach the fold point anatomically. It should not be forgotten that the scar depends entirely on the person’s genetic factors and their external factors ( smoking – sun exposure, etc.).

4
When is the right time for the procedure?

The surgery period is not separated in summer or winter; in general, surgery can be performed by taking necessary precautions in all seasons.

5
Can it be combined with other surgeries?

Yes, in general, it can be frequently combined with upper eyelid or facelift surgeries.

6
Is general anaesthesia required? Can it be done under local anaesthesia?

Due to its surgical localization, we prefer general anaesthesia or preferably mild anaesthesia/sedation in lower eyelid surgery compared to the upper eyelid.

7
How is the post-procedure process?

We welcome you to the hospital for one night for observation after lower eyelid aesthetics. You will be discharged the next morning after our inspection. In this process, your self-melting stitches inside the eyelid will not be removed, and there will be no dressing covering your eyes; you will only use special cream and drops in the first days. It is recommended to keep your head high and ice compress for the first two days. In general, the first control examination is performed between the first 7-10 days.

8
When is returned to daily life?

Although the eyebags’ adaptation is removed or readjusted after the lower eyelid surgery takes longer than the upper eyelid, swelling and bruising are observed for the first 7-10 days. In general, after the 7th day, a controlled return to social life is made.

9
When will the final result be seen?

The lower eyelid skin and subcutaneous tissues, which are thin and very sensitive after the lower eyelid surgery, is initially slightly swollen but adaptation completed in the average third month. However, all healing, as in any surgery, is 6-12 months, which is the body’s natural process. In this process, laser treatments can be supported by our dermatologist team’s opinions in some patients.
